Analysis
Georgia Tech has endured a seesaw start to the season to reach 3-3, not just alternating wins and losses but having rather large disparities in the results with three scoring efforts of 31 or more points in wins but also being held to 21 or fewer points in all three losses. The Yellow Jackets beat North Carolina and played close with Clemson in what looked like two of the toughest games on the schedule this season but also had a stunning home loss to Northern Illinois to open the season. The production has been consistent however as Georgia Tech has posted at least 394 yards in every game outside of 309 vs. Clemson’s top tier defense. Only Pittsburgh’s elite offense has had a sizable production advantage vs. the Yellow Jackets, and it is worth noting that starting quarterback Jeff Sims missed two games as the production for this offense may be slightly understated in the season numbers. Virginia is riding high with a 48-0 win over Duke last week after Georgia Tech narrowly beat the Blue Devils two weeks ago, but the Cavaliers are 3-2 in ACC play with two of those wins by a combined total of three points. Virginia has two ACC losses by a combined total of 40 points and turnovers led to last week’s blowout win as Duke had production levels that suggested a more competitive result. Georgia Tech has a very solid run defense allowing 3.5 yards per play as the defensive line can hold its own while Virginia is allowing 5.4 yards per rush, one of the worst rates among all power five teams. Brennan Armstrong leads the nation in passing yards, but he has taken 21 sacks and has six interceptions and the Cavaliers have not fared well when he has been forced to carry the load, -39 in scoring while 1-2 in the three games he has had to pass more than 45 times with four of his interceptions in those games as well. These teams have played very tight games the past three meetings and in a classic run vs. pass contest in comparing these offenses, Georgia Tech is attractively priced with this underdog number. Thank you for playing with Nelly’s and Best of Luck.
