Analysis
Off yesterday's humiliating 14-0 road loss to the Devil Rays, the Yankees will travel to South Beach on Friday night and pound the Marlins. Miami enters this contest off Wednesday's 8-7 loss at Baltimore and this will be a tough encore for manager Don Mattingly's crew. Up on the bump for the Bronx Bombers will be red-hot right-hander James Taillon. In four July starts, No. 50 has been scratched for only four earned runs and 15 hits in 25.1 innings of work. Taillon struck out 20 and walked eight on his way to a 3-0 record and a beautiful 1.42 ERA. Equally impressive, in two career starts against the Fish, James has been lights out posting a 1-0 mark with a stunning 0.82 ERA. Rookie righty Zach Thompson will counter for the home team. Matched up against the Padres, Phillies, and Braves in his last three performances, No. 74 was tagged for six earned runs and eight hits in 15.0 frames. Thompson fanned 11 and walked four on his way to an 0-1 tally with a 3.60 ERA. Zach hasn't found much luck under the lights either. At night, Thompson has surrendered five earned runs and 12 hits in 12.0 innings. After the math, that equates to an 0-2 record with a 3.75 ERA. This isn't the best wagering spot for the home team either. Miami has dropped 11 of its last 14 against American League opponents, 50 of its last 74 when facing a foe that allowed five runs or more last, 39 of its last 56 against AL foes that hold a winning record, and eight of its last 10 in the first game of a series. On the other side of LoanDepot Park, New York has won seven of its last 11 overall and seven of its last 10 when battling a foe that allowed five runs or more last. Without the services of CF Starling Marte and closer Yimi Garcia (both traded yesterday), the Marlins just don't have enough talent on the field to knock of the mighty Pinstripes. Take New York with Taillon. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
