- Analysis
- As the MAC season comes to a close, the conference championship lineup presents numerous scenarios. Only five teams have been eliminated, while neither Kent State nor Ball State is all but out. That leaves us with six.
Western Michigan has the easiest path: win out and it's in. If not, the Broncos need a loss from Miami (OH) or Buffalo to clinch a spot. Then there's Ohio, which hosts UMass tonight and also is in a solid spot, needing only to win out to get in. The Bobcats could also clinch if Toledo beats Central Michigan to end the season, but when you're facing one of the worst teams in the nation, why not just enhance your chances by yourselves?
UMass has scored seven or fewer points in five of its last eight games, and with this being its last road game, I don't know if it even gets on the board. Last week the Minutemen played one of the worst teams in the MAC in Massachusetts, and Northern Illinois walked out of there with a 45-3 win.
Now in Ohio, where the Bobcats are trying to get into the conference championship and angry after a 17-13 loss at Western Michigan, we're looking at a similar scenario from Oct. 18. The Bobcats were hosting NIU after a 20-14 loss at Ball State, and beat the Huskies 48-21. Again, the Huskies just beat the Minutemen at UMass by 42. You do the math.
