Football tips and observations from over the weekend that may inform my decision-making for making NFL picks and College Football picks this week.
DID THE VIKINGS PUT JOSH FREEMAN IN A NO-WIN POSITION?
It was just a horrendous football game last night. Josh Freeman was especially terrible. Trent Dilfer and Steve Young criticized the Vikings for even putting him on the field if he was that unprepared. That is surprising. It is also surprising that when this game was still winnable for Minnesota in the 3rd quarter that they did not bench Freeman for either Christian Ponder or Matt Cassel. But I do disagree that it was too much to expect Freeman to be effective at all with just eleven days with the organization. Thaddeus Lewis came off the Bills practice squad in a week and since led his team to an overtime loss to the Bengals and then an upset win over the Dolphins. Is Lewis better than the former first round draft pick in Freeman who was considered a future franchise quarterback just two years ago? And how does Adrian Peterson touch the ball only thirteen times? Buffalo's formula for success with Lewis was to deploy their strong ground game to set up the passing game. Instead, the Vikings asked Freeman to throw the ball a whopping 54 times. Just a mess. Yet with all the dropped passes by both teams (including a few in the end zone) as well as a few dropped interceptions that would have been likely pick-sixes (for both teams), this game could have easily gone Over the 48 points -- even with Freeman making the start after less than two weeks with the team. What a debacle of a game.
