Recent Form

This is the fourth game in a four-game series. Arizona took the first game of this series in dominant fashion, as they tagged starter Yu Darvish for 5 runs. Arizona’s offense came alive with 15 hits in a 12-3 victory. Arizona backers were happy as the money line cashed at a hefty +210. In Game 2, on Friday we saw Madison Bumgarner and Blake Snell battle it out on the mound. Once again the Padres offense couldn’t get runs across the dish. After they tied it in the 7th, Arizona hit a walk off home run (Varsho) to get the 3-2 win. The Padres have dropped three in a row and can’t wait to get back to Petco Park where they’ve played much better than on the road.

Series History

San Diego and Arizona have split the season series 5-5. San Diego opens a 3 games series at Coors Field starting Monday. Arizona welcomes Philadelphia to Chase field on Tuesday.

Statistical Comparison

San Diego is on top of most of the NL team stats. This Padres team runs off that high powered offense that can seemingly put up runs whenever they choose. Padres as a team are ranked 4th in team batting average in the NL (.248), 5th in the NL with RBI’s (533), 4th in hits NL (969), and they lead the NL in stolen bases (93). They’re also backed up by pitching that tops the stats in pitching. Padres are 4th in NL with wins (66), 4th in ERA (3.64), 2nd in NL saves (38), and 3rd in strikeouts (1,134).

Their opponents on the other hand are at the opposite ends of the spectrum. Arizona is at the bottom of pretty much all statistical charts. Arizona ranks 12th in NL in batting average (234) and 14th in home runs (102). Arizona is last in the NL in ERA (5.30), wins (37), and saves (15).

Game Preview

The San Diego Padres are right in the playoff race. They find themselves 10 games behind the division leading San Francisco Giants, but more importantly they are currently in the 2nd wild card spot. The Padres hold a 2.5 game lead over the Reds for the second spot, and they’re also 5 games behind the Dodgers for home field in the wild card game. In the Padres last 3 losses they’ve scored a combined 5 runs (-17 run diff.). The Padres had a hot July, and need to get back on track with an easier stretch of schedule coming up. The Padres will have a bullpen game as they’ll start Craig Stammen (3.31 era). Stammen will be making his 2nd start this month. Stammen keeps the ball in the park, but I’d be surprised if he pitches more than 2 innings. The Padres have one of the best bullpens in baseball. They’re also the most used bullpen in baseball. The return of Fernando Tatis Jr. should revamp this offense. Manny Machado has kept the offense alive in Tatis’s absence. They made a lot of big moves in the offseason and the trade deadline. The Padres were expected to contend for a World Series on Opening Day. Now they need to find that passion and make a run to win the NL West.

Arizona owns the worst record in MLB sitting at 37-80 on the season. They’re a team that’s in rebuild. With a lack of power behind the plate, and broken rotation, Arizona could be a historically bad team. Arizona sends Zac Gallen to the mound (4.87 era). Arizona’s starters have been decent at times, but the bullpen is a powder keg. Arizona needs a strong start from Gallen and the offense needs to hit well if they want to keep this game competitive.

San Diego Padres vs Arizona Diamondbacks Prediction
The Padres will be looking to salvage this series with a victory in the finale Sunday. I trust the Padres bullpen more than any pitcher in Arizona. We like San Diego -160
