College Football Overrateds and Underrateds
by Scott Spreitzer - 10/29/2013
Each week, after the new top-25 rankings are released, I break them down into three categories, including the week's most overrated team, most underrated team, and potentially, one team outside the top-25 that should be ranked. We look to use this as a gauge for potential weekly plays, taking advantage of public perception, whether a team is enjoying too much hype or not enough.
MOST OVERRATED TOP-25 TEAM
I could have easily made it three straight weeks with the Miami Hurricanes in this spot, but I think you got
the point last week. Instead, I'll have to go to another ACC team and put the Clemson Tigers
in this spot. Take a look at the Clemson schedule and you'll see softy-after-softy. And we all saw what
happened in their one step-up contest of the season - they were blasted at home by Florida State. HC
Dabo Swiney has recruited a lot of talent to this team, but they aren't reaching their potential. The blowout
loss to FSU was an absolute embarrassment. The 38-35 win over Georgia means very little after the
Bulldogs lost to Missouri & Vanderbilt in back-to-back weeks. Clemson is on the road at Virginia this
weekend and the early money agrees with Clemson being over-valued. And unfortunately for the Tigers,
there's no one left on their schedule to get this team back in the national title discussion...THANKFULLY!
After all, they don't deserve it. But ranked 8th in the BCS, they do deserve to be this week's Most Overrated
MOST UNDERRATED TOP-25 TEAM
The Big-10 is down, no doubt about it, but I'm going to make an argument for the Wisconsin Badgers.
Wisconsin is ranked 24th in the BCS standings with their only two losses coming in controversial
fashion at Arizona State and on the road at Ohio State. No shame in losing to either of those two
schools. HC Gary Anderson is transitioning the program into his style of attack and they have scored
at least 30 points in all but one game, scoring 24 in the 7-point loss to the Buckeyes. UW could be
a little better passing the football, but they're 11th in the nation in total yards per game and 6th in
the nation in total yards allowed. According to my power ratings, Wiscy should win each of their
last five games, including this week's game in Iowa City where they have risen to a 9 1/2 point
favorite over Iowa. The Badgers will need a little help to overcome Ohio State in the Leaders
Division. That's not likely to happen, but Wisconsin, at 24th in this week's BCS is my Most Underrated
UNRANKED TEAM THAT SHOULD BE IN THE TOP-25
BYU gets the nod this week. The Cougars are 6-2 SU (5-3 ATS) with losses coming in the season opener
at Virginia and to Utah in Provo. The UVA loss doesn't look too hot, but the Cougars were playing
in a rain-drenched stadium. They statistically dominated the Cavaliers, but QB Taysom Hill had a
tough night throwing the football and UVA was able to score the game-winning TD with less than
3 minutes to go in the game. Since then, besides the loss to Utah, BYU has been dominant, including
a 40-21 blowout win over Texas as a 7-point underdog. Taysom Hill is one of the most unsung QBs
you'll find this season. Hill has thrown for over 2,000 yards and 12 TDs and he has run for over
800 yards and 8 TDs on the ground. The team is a beast in the running game and they are somewhat
stingy on defense allowing just 21 ppg. The Cougars have this weekend off before traveling to
Madison, Wisconsin on November 9. That's going to be a very interesting game. As for now, BYU
is this week's Unranked Team that should be Ranked.
