2013 NFL Preseason Notes

*In the last eight preseasons, home underdogs are 52-31-3 ATS.

*Since the 2001 season, NFL ‘X’ games in which the home team is an UNDERDOG (or ‘pick em) have gone 70-39-3 under the total.

Thursday August 8, 2013

Ravens at Bucs:

Ravens QBs Joe Flacco Caleb Hanie, Tyrod Taylor

Ravens: Eight starters left via free agency, and another one went down with an injury just the other day. Dennis Pitta fractured his hip and had to have surgery to repair it on Sunday. He will definitely be out for the opener, and he could miss up to the entire season. they will have to hold a battle at TE and WR to find out who will likely be the 2nd and 3rd options in the passing game.

*Coach John Harbaugh has been very good in the preseason in his tenure with the Ravens. He is 13-7 SU and is 4-1 SU in Week 1 of the preseason.

Ravens 5-1 ATS in Week 1 preseason.

Buccaneers QBs: Josh Freeman Dan Orlovsky Mike Glennon (R), Adam Weber

rookie Mike Glennon beat out all the other QBs on the roster in a skills test.

the Bucs need to find a solid backup running back to Doug Martin. Tampa could run the ball hard with Glennon in the game. Veteran RBs Brian Leonard and rookie Mike James are battling for spots and time.

*Last preseason, the Ravens starters on offense only played a few series, while the Bucs’ players played most of the first quarter of Schaino’s first game.

Bucs: 8-1-1 ATS in Week 1 preseason.

Bengals at Falcons

Bengal QBs: Andy Dalton, Josh Johnson, Zac Robinson.

WR AJ Green is still dealing with a knee bruise

Falcon QBs: Matt Ryan, Dominique Davis, Seth Doege (R), Sean Renfree (R)

The Falcons have very little offensive position battles going on this offseason.

*Mike Smith doesn’t pay too much attention to the preseason, especially early in the exhibition games. Since Smith took over in 2008, the Falcons are 7-13 SU in the preseason, and they are 1-4 SU in Week 1 of the preseason behind Smith. Subsequently, the Falcons have a winning record in Week 3’s of the preseason at 4-1 SU, so maybe we should wait until Week 3 before betting the Falcons.

*Mike Smith is 1-7 SU/ATS in the Falcons’ last two preseasons,

Atlanta 7-1 over the total in Week 1 preseason.

Rams at Browns

Ram QBs: Sam Bradford, Kellen Clemens, Austin Davis, Tim Jenkins (R).

The Rams lost several starters on offense. Rookie WR Tavon Austin is 1st round pick.

Sam Bradford played just two series in last year’s preseason Week 1, and the offensive starters played less than that.

*Fisher is 8-7 SU in Week 1 of the preseason

Rams 5-0 over the total in Week 1 preseason.

Brown QBs: Brandon Weeden, Brian Hoyer, Jason Campbell.

New coach Rob Chudzinski (Ohio native) and OC Norv Turner.

Redskins at Titans

Redskin QBs: Robert Griffin, Rex Grossman, Kirk Cousins, Pat White

Kirk Cousins will start in this game for the Skins.

Shanahan has a great preseason record at 49-23 SU, 44-34-2 ATS.

t he has more guys coming back from major injuries that he’s had in a while. Besides Griffin, Brian Orakpo, Fred Davis and Pierre Garcon are all coming back from or trying to manage injuries.

Titan QBs: Jake Locker, Rusty Smitn, Ryan Fitzpatrick.

3rd year Coach Mike Munchak is off a bad season, so there is some heat on him to produce.

Last year in the preseason, he played Matt Hasselbeck the entire first quarter, and then gave the reigns to Jake Locker for the 2nd quarter.

After losing in Week 1 of the preseason last year, Munchak and the Titans went on to win their next three preseason games SU. In his tenure in Nashville, the Titans are 6-2 SU and 5-3 ATS in NFLX.

Broncos at 49ers

Bronco QBs: Peyton Manning, Brock Osweiler , Ryan Katz (R), Zach Dysert (R).

*John Fox has been very good as a head coach in the preseason. He is 23-21 SU and 7-4 SU in Week 1 of the preseason. Last year coming in, Manning got a series to start the first preseason game (he threw an interception),

49er QBs: Colin Kaepernick, Colt McCoy, Scott Tolzien, BJ Daniels (R)

Jim Harbaugh is 5-3 ATS and SU in the preseason as a head coach, but last year he had a quick hook for Alex Smith after one series.

Seahawks at Chargers

Seahawk QBs: Russell Wilson, Tarvaris Jackson, Brady Quinn.

WRs thin, Percey Harvins is out, they already are without Sidney Rice who is flying to Switzerland to have a knee procedure.

Pete Carroll is 7-5 SU in the preseason in Seattle, and he is also 3-0 SU in Week 1 of the preseason,

Charger QBs: Philip Rivers, Charlie Whitehurst, Brad Sorenson (R), Nathan Ederle

new coach Mike McCoy

in the last eight preseasons, home underdogs are 52-31-3 ATS.

Friday August 9, 2013

NY Jets at Lions:

Jets QBs: Mark Sanchez, Gino Smith (R), Greg McElroy, Matt Simms (rookie, Tennessee).

*Rex Ryan is only 6-10 SU and 7-9 ATS in his preseason-coaching career.

*Jets were 0-4 SU/ATS last preseason scoring 6, 3, 12 and 10 points! 3-1 under.

*Sanchez: 26 TOs in each of last two years (52 TOs last 2 years is most in NFL).

*New OC Marty Mornhingweg comes over from Philly where he ran a West Coast attack, a short, safe passing game. That may or may not help embattled QB Mark Sanchez (13 TDs, 18 INTs), 34 sacks. He completed just 54% of his passes.

*LY preseason opener lost 17-6 at Bengals with 173 yards, 57 yards passing, 2 TOs.

*0-5 SU/ATS preseason run. Also 0-4 ATS in Week 1 preseason.

Lion QBs: Matt Stafford, Shaun Hill, Thad Lewis, Kellen Moore.

*Jim Schwartz is 12-4 SU and 11-5 ATS in the preseason over the last four seasons,

*Detroit had the No. 5 pick in the NFL draft and took BYU DE Ziggy Ansah, so this line is loaded with depth and talent.

*The Lions special teams were among the NFL's worst in just about every category in 2012, but under new special teams coach John Bonamego, the unit has found a new level of energy.

* 2012 preseason opener was at home against Browns, a 19-17 loss, blowing a 17-10 4th Q lead. Lions had 368 yards (198 rushing), allowed 429 yds. Stafford: 4-7 for 51 yards. Shaun Hill: 8-12 83 yards, 1 Td.

Pats at Eagles:

Patriots Tom Brady, Tim Tebow, Ryan Mallett

Bill Belichick is 39-34 SU in his preseason career, and 35-32-6 ATS.

*In Week 1 of the preseason, Belichick’s teams have gone 10-4 SU. Every other week of the preseason he is around .500,

In last year’s Week 1 preseason game, Tom Brady played nearly the entire first quarter. Brady normally gets at least two and sometimes three series on the field for the first preseason game

New England is still figuring out their WR rotation alongside Danny Amendola.

Eagle QBs: Michael Vick, Nick Foles, Matt Barkley (R), Dennis Dixon, GJ Kinne.

New coach Chip Kelly.

WR Jeremy Maclin done, an undermanned wide receiver corps missing another important piece. WR Damaris Johnson took snaps with the first team. But deep reserve Greg Salas, with 27 career catches, has the most catches of the group. Overall, the seven have accounted for just 40 NFL receptions. The deficit at wide receiver was apparent in Friday's practice. One week earlier, when the full team practiced for the first time, the roster included Maclin, Cooper, and Arrelious Benn among the top options. Maclin will not play this year, Cooper will not play in the immediate future, and Benn has not practiced since he suffered a knee injury on the first day. Plus, the team already waived B.J. Cunningham, who was on the practice squad throughout 2012.

Eagles are 1-7-1 ATS in Week 1 preseason.

Dolphins at Jaguars:

Dolphin QBs: Ryan Tannehill, Matt Moore, Pat Devlin

2nd preseason game for Miami.

Jaguar QBs: Blaine Gabbert, Chad Henne, Mike Kafka, Matt Scott (R).

New coach Gus Bradley (DC under Pete Carroll in Seattle).

A bad offensive line last year and there have been struggles already in practice.

Bradley is putting an emphasis on competition and evaluation.

Jaguars 7-1 over the total in Week 1 preseason.

Bears at Panthers:

Bear QBs: Jay Cutler, Josh McCown, Matt Blanchard

New HC Marc Trestman the Bears are a different team on offense, an up-tempo attack.

Jay Cutler and the rest of the Chicago starters didn’t even play in the first preseason game last year under Smith, but learning a new offense, they will be on the field for a couple of series to start this game.

Bears 7-1 over the total in Week 1 preseason.

Panther QBs: Cam Newton, Jimmy Clausen, Derek Anderson

Last year, Cam Newton played three full series in their preseason Week 1 loss to the Texans,

RBs thin: Jonathon Stewart is still out, Deangelo Williams will only play for a little bit, and Mike Tolbert is a veteran as well.

Texans at Vikings:

Texans Matt Schaub, T.J. Yates, Case Keenum, Stephen McGee

Gary Kubiak is 16-12 SU and 16-10-2 ATS in the preseason.

Last year in Week 1, Matt Schaub played the entire first quarter in a win over Carolina.

Vikings QBs: Christian Ponder, Matt Cassel, McLeod B.-Thompson, James Vandenberg (R).

Leslie Frazier is 6-6 SU and ATS in the preseason.

New Wrs: Greg Jennings has come over, Kyle Rudolph is aboard, and they drafted WR Cordarelle Patterson (Tennessee, 1st round).

Chiefs at Saints:

Chief QBs: Alex Smith, Chase Daniel, Ricky Stanzi, Tyler Bray (R).

New Coach Andy Reid. Reid said not to expect much different from the Chiefs in terms of a preseason routine. “You want to see what your rookie class looks like, for sure,” he said.

*The first priority will be to evaluate their many young players. A secondary concern is to get some positive play from the starters. “I’m going to try to do both the best we can,” Reid said. “We’re going to get the starters work. We’ll start out gradually, and we’ll increase their time as the games go on.”

*Reid indicated that because of the disjointed nature of preseason games, he doesn’t believe that teams can build much momentum until the regular season. “Teams are very vanilla in the preseason,” Reid said.

Andy Reid’s Eagles teams were 1-7-1 ATS in Week 1 preseason.

Saint QBs: Drew Brees, Luke McCown, Ryan Griffin (R), Seneca Wallace.

Players on offense have insisted the run game has become a priority after they ranked among the bottom of the NFL with 1,577 rushing yards last season.

*Saints 6-1 under the total in Week 1 preseason.

Cards at Packers:

Cardinal QBs: Carson Palmer, Drew Stanton, Ryan Lindley, Caleb TerBush

HC Bruce Ariens and his new-look Cardinals. Ariens filled in for Chuck Pagano in Indianapolis last year.

Veteran quarterbacks Drew Stanton and Ryan Lindley will both get plenty of time in this game

Packer QBs: Aaron Rodgers, Graham Harrell, B.J. Coleman

The Packers might be more concerned with their young running game, with Rookies Eddie Lacy and Jonathon Franklin. Lacy has looked like the power back in practice the Packers have lacked.

Cowboys at Raiders:

Cowboys Tony Romo, Kyle Orton, Nick Stephens, Alex Tanney.

Second game for Dallas.

Raider QBs: Matt Flynn, Terelle Pryor, Tyler Wilson (R), Matt McGoin (R) TEAM

While some thought fourth-round pick Tyler Wilson might give Terrelle Pryor a run for his money for the Raiders’ backup quarterback job, the rookie is having a hard time holding off Matt McGloin for the No. 3 spot. After a week in camp, the undrafted free agent out of Penn State has started taking snaps away from Wilson in practice.

*Pryor still often waits for receivers to come out of their cut before throwing the ball. He also sometimes waits too long to take off out of the pocket. It’s almost like he wants to prove so bad that he can be a traditional passer that’s he’s not taking advantage of his chances to run.

*Rookie cornerback D.J. Hayden will be out until at least training camp.

Saturday August 10, 2013

Giants at Steelers:

Giants QB rotation: Eli Manning, David Carr, Ryan Nassib (rookie), Curtis Painter.

Nassib has looked good in practice, moving up to the No. 3 QB spot.

Tom Coughlin is 4-5 SU in Week 1’s of the preseasons since he took over the Giants.

*Road play killed NY in 2012, 3-5 SU, 3-4-1 ATS and that was after a 2-1 start.

*Lost the preseason opener at Jaguars last year, 32-31, blew 24-14 halftime lead. Had just 258 yards, 2 Tos. Manning: 4-8, 60 yds, Carr: 6-10, 48 yds, 2 TDs, no INTs. In 2011 lost NFLX opener 20-10 at Carolina.

Steelers QB rotation: Big Ben, Bruce Gradkowski, Landry Jones, John Parker Wilson.

*3-1 SU, 3-1 ATS last preseason. 12-4 SU/ATS last 4 preseasons.

*Adding outside zone-blocking schemes this season, which 2nd round pick RB Le'Veon Bell ran at Michigan State. The purpose of the stretch play is to get the defensive linemen and linebackers flowing vertically to the sideline, eventually creating a gap in the defense for the running back to find.

*The defensive line is one of the main areas of focus for the Steelers in this game and the preseason. After their three starters up front, they have some much needed evaluation to do on their 2nd and 3rd string defensive line.

Sunday August 11, 2013

Bills at Colts:

Bills QBs: Kevin Kolb, EJ Manuel (R), Jeff Tuel.

Kolb had a “freak injury” Saturday when he hurt his knee while slipping – but not falling – on a rubber mat while walking between two practice fields. Kolb is locked in a battle for the starting QB job, and Manuel arguably has a slight lead through the first week of camp.

*Bills WR Stevie Johnson estimated he will be out “a week or a few weeks” due to the pulled hamstring he suffered in Friday’s practice. The net effect of the two injuries is a bonus for the Bills’ top two draft picks – QB EJ Manuel and WR Robert Woods.

*Buffalo hired former Syracuse coach Doug Marrone as their new head coach. He ran conservative offenses in college and coached the New York Jets' offensive line from 2002 to 2005 when Herm Edwards also ran conservative offenses.

Colts QBs: QB Andrew Luck, Chandler Harnish, Matt Hassellbeck.

New Colts' OC Pep Hamilton is installing his offense, an uptempo unit.

Colts 1-5 ATS in Week 1 preseason.
