Heisman Trophy Top Candidates
by Wayne Root - 11/02/2012
"The Heisman Trophy is the greatest individual trophy in the sporting world."
by WAYNE ALLYN ROOT
1) Collin Klein, QB Kansas St.---Collin is the overwhelming front runner at this point. What he did the past two weeks were incredible against West Virginia and Texas Tech. Klein combined for 316 yards and four touchdowns running and passing as Kansas State crushed a quality Texas Tech team.
He's thrown 12 TD's compared to 2 INT's this year. He has a 5.2 rushing average when he's not throwing completions. He seems to be getting better and better each week, which bodes well not only for his Heisman hopes, but also for his team's chances at the national title.
2) Geno Smith, QB West Virginia---Geno needed a much deserved bye week and it came at the perfect time. He needs a huge game against TCU this weekend to give his candidacy some life after two straight losses and combined with a Collin Klein off day it may not be too late. Another rough outing will put an end to his Heisman hopes, but a return to his early-season form might cause voters to take a second look.
3) AJ McCarron, QB Alabama---AJ needs to step up and really move the offense this week against a defense that has the reputation to disallow that being accomplished. This Saturday's game against LSU gives him a chance to show that's he's more than just a game manager. But he has to do more than simply handing the ball off. He's perfect with his TD's to INT's at 18 to none!! He's passed for 54 more yards than Collin Klein so that should bode well with the voters; but only if he throws well this week at LSU.
4) Manti Te'o, LB Notre Dame---Let's mess with the voters and throw in a really great Linebacker. I know I love a hard hitting man in the middle of the field wrecking havoc on the offense. He's had 80 tackles, 39 solo and 5 tackles for a loss. He's also had 5 interceptions and recovered 2 fumbles. When the Nation acknowledges the Fighting Irish, they mention it's their defense. If that's the case then Mr Te'o is certainly a viable candidate for the Heisman. Give it to the defensive guy!!!
