NCAA Football Top 10

   by Wayne Root - 11/16/2012

1) Oregon---In a blink of an eye, Marcus Mariota threw the third of his school record-tying six touchdown passes and Oregon turned a tight game into another blowout as the Ducks set a major college football record by scoring at least 40 points for a 13th straight game. That tight game quickly turned into a 59-17 rout over California. The Ducks are the best quick score team in history. The have had 40 TD drives that have taken under 2 MINUTES!!! This is the team everyone should want to see in the title game. The play Stanford this week and as a 3-TD favorite it will be interesting to see that quick-score offense against a decent defense.

2) Kansas St---It was a hard fought game for K-St last week as they dodged bullets and beat a very competitive team in TCU, 23-10. I think seeing Bama lose while playing TCU boosted Collin Klein's performance and had the adrenalin flowing at top speed. Only a few minutes after No. 1 Alabama lost, Klein threw a 62-yard pass to set up the first of his two touchdown runs. They have Baylor up next on the road as the pressure mounts for Collin Klein and Bill Snyder's Wildcats.

3) Notre Dame---Hooray for the Fighting Irish!! After defeating Oklahoma and having to justify their place in the elite top 5 and then surviving a Triple OT win against Pitt, it was said that this year's team was dedicated to the basics and defense. They avoided any letdown and proceeded to dump Boston College 21-6 on the road, giving the Irish a workmanlike victory over a rival that had twice before ended their drive to a national championship. Taking the field soon after top-ranked Alabama lost to No. 15 Texas A&M, Notre Dame eased past a BC team hoping that a victory in the rivalry known locally as "The Holy War" would springboard them solidly into the Top 5 and get rid of some critics. "We're going to worry about winning," Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said. "If people don't like us winning, there's nothing we can do." Notre Dame has it easy this week against Wake Forest.

4) Alabama---They almost pulled it out. But the pass completion was tipped in front of the end zone and the upset in front of all the Bama fans was stunning as A&M defeated Crimson 29-24. Johnny Football, QB Texas A&M, led his team in scoring the first 20 points leaving the entire State in a state of shock!! It was still the first time Alabama had trailed at halftime since a loss at South Carolina in 2010. Maybe the Tide believed the clippings that A&M entered this game 1-10 against top-ranked teams. Sabin was focused after the game pitching and reminding reporters that 2 out of 3 national championship teams coached by him had 1 loss. How would you like to be Western Carolina this week having to play Alabama?

5) Georgia---Georgia defeated Auburn 38-0 on the road last week to move into the elite top 5 spot. BUT, the Bulldogs are saving a bigger celebration for a bigger game. Georgia got the first shutout for either team in the series since its 28-0 win in 1976. The Bulldogs, who have won four straight, appear to be peaking at the end of the regular season. They are the SEC Eastern Champions and will meet Alabama Dec 1st....provided that Bama beats rival Auburn Nov 24th. The Dawgs play Georgia Southern this week.

6) Ohio State---Ohio St had no problems last week in front of their home crowd as they defeated Illinois 52-22. Now Urban Meyer has some time to prepare an unbeaten yet flawed Ohio State team for what he calls "the two big ones left." One is this week as they play at Wisconsin. The other one of course is when they host bitter rival Michigan November 24th. This season is quite remarkable. They were just 6-7 a year ago and are one probation this season but still fight and play hard for Urban Meyer. Wait till next season. meanwhile they'll have their hands full this week as they are a small underdog at Wisconsin in what will be an exciting contest.

7) Florida---The Gators paid UL-Lafayette $950,000 to be their opponent for their Homecoming; not to cause the biggest upset in Florida's history. With 2 seconds remaining, the Gators blocked a punt and run it in untouched for a TD, (Talk about BAD coaching for the Rajin Cajuns). Who knows, maybe that was in the small print that nobody reads which created his decision. The Gators finished with 311 yards against the 89th-ranked defense in the county, a unit that allowed 65 points against Oklahoma State in September. This week it's back to back scares for the Gators as they play Jacksonville St. Good luck Florida.

8) LSU---LSU played Mississippi St and won convincingly 37-17. Then Les Miles promptly declared that all other teams in the Country should have to play the SEC Champion for the BCS Title. And said so on the day Alabama went down...what's with that timing? This week it's a home game again against Ole Miss. BUT, it start at 2:30 local time. Their biggest home game blowouts are usually night games when alcohol has taken over and the fans are much wilder. This will be interesting to see if their is any difference in the play and the passion from the fans.

9) Texas A&M---A&M 29---Alabama 24. That game will be long remembered as THE GAME! It's also the introduction to the Nation as Johnny Football played brilliantly. The game was in Tide Country and with the score 20-0, the fans were left stunned. And it was only in the first quarter. And he's just a red-shirt freshman.
A&M QB Manziel passed for 253 yards and rushed for 92, confusing the Tide defense with his ability to keep plays alive and his ability to make plays. They get a breather as their next game is against Sam Houston State.

10) Florida State---The Seminoles survived a huge scare on the road last Saturday. They rallied and edged Virginia tech 28-22. FSU won their fourth straight and moved within a victory against Maryland on Nov. 17 of securing a spot in the ACC championship game Dec. 1. The Hokies held Florida St to 310 yards which is 200 below their average. They must have heard that by winning out they get to play Duke in the Title game and turned off the jets on offense. We'll see have they rebound off a WIN...as they are just a 31 point favorite on the road against Maryland. Good Luck Noles!!
