Random Thoughts

   by Larry Ness

As Al Pacino said in the movie ....And
Justice For All, "there's something REALLY WRONG"!

Since the BCS was put in charge of screwing up CFB seasons back in 1998, there has NEVER been more than TWO undefeated teams at the end of a regular season! With Utah and Boise State already in at 11-0 and USC,
Oklahoma and Auburn ready to join them by Saturday night at 12-0, it looks as if the 2004 season will end with FIVE unbeaten schools!...

Of course USC (about a three-TD favorite at UCLA), Oklahoma (a three-TD favorite in the Big-12 Championship
Game vs Colorado) and Auburn (almost a two-TD favorite vs Tennessee in the SEC Championship Game) don't HAVE to win this Saturday....

BCS spokespeople love to say "have patience, wait until the all the games have been played and let's see how the
postseason schedule stacks up then?"....

That's actually a very fair argument but these guys could be in for a nightmare! Already we know that the Big-10 is sending a two-loss Michigan team to the Rose bowl and that the ACC-winner (Va Tech or Miami) will have two losses. The Big East representative will be either
Pittsburgh at 8-3 or 7-4) or God forbid, 6-5 Syracuse!...

What a "reward" it will be for Utah, the first non-BCS school to make it to a BCS Bowl game at 11-0, to then have to play either of these two JOKERS!...

Better yet, let Colorado upset Oklahoma and maybe the Fiesta Bowl could be host to a four-loss Colorado team facing a four-loss Pittsburgh team or a five-loss Syracuse team! Meanwhile, either Cal or Texas will be LEFT OUT!...

The second-best bowl game, if you
assume the best is the BCS title game between the eventual No. 1 and No. 2 teams, looks like it will be the
Liberty Bowl, where Louisville will host Boise St....

Louisville at 10-1 and the nation's highest-scoring team at 49.8 PPG, may just be the nation's best non-BCS school (I doubt Miami-Fla would argue!). Boise St at 11-0, is the
nation's second-highest scoring team at 49.7 PPG and owns the nation's longest-current winning streak at 22
straight games. Louisville (still must play at Tulane where the Cardinals are about a four-TD favorite!) and Boise State have each scored at least 55 points in their last four games! That's something that was last done by Alabama, in 1945!...

The Liberty Bowl is of course played in beautiful downtown Memphis on December 31 at 6:30 ET. That game ought to draw a HUGE television audience!...

As Al said, "there's something REALLY WRONG"!....
