Are you kidding me Merrill Hoge? The ESPN analyst claimed that the Titans have now become the favorite to make it to the Super Bowl from the AFC after QB Vince Young was injured. He basically stated that Kerry Collins was such a monumental upgrade that Tennessee went from an average team to the Super Bowl favorite. Hey Merrill, we are definitely not enamored with Young, but Collins isn’t anything special either. There is a reason he is the back up at Tennessee and not starting for another team….
And we thought Packer fans were rabid? As poor as the Redskins looked in game one vs. the Giants, we have to at least give kudos to their loyal fans. They currently have 200,000 people on their season ticket waiting list which is the most in the NFL. They have also sold out 319 consecutive games which is the longest streak in the league…
Nice defense Detroit. The Lions allowed the Falcons to roll up 34 points and almost 500 yards of total offense with a ROOKIE QB at the helm. Atlanta rushed for an incredible 318 yards in that game. RB Michael Turner broke the Atlanta rushing record in his first game ever for the Birds rolling up 220 yards on the ground (10 yards per carry). A word of advice to Detroit’s defensive coordinator Joe Barry, load up against the run and make the rookie QB beat you next time…
For those of you who thought Notre Dame would be drastically improved this year, think again. They had to come from behind to beat a poor San Diego State team last week 21-13. The Irish were out gained in the game and needed some help from the officials in the fourth when SDSU fumbled going into the endzone to make the score 20-7 in favor of the Aztecs. ND recovered and it was called a touch back although we’re not so sure the Aztec RB didn’t cross the goal line before he fumbled. Notre Dame whimpered their way to 105 yards rushing against a SDSU defensive line that was so banged up coming in they had to move a few linebackers in there. Oh by the way, the Aztecs lost at home in week one to Division 1AA Cal-Poly. What’s even worse news for Irish fans is that after the game, San Diego State head coach Chuck Long was asked who he thought was better, Cal-Poly or Notre Dame. His response was, “That’s a tough question.â€쳌 Wow. Not a ringing endorsement for the talent in South Bend.
Shame on the officials in the BYU – Washington game. If they are calling it strictly by the book, I guess to throw the ball in the air is to throw the ball in the air. It’s supposed to be called an “unsportsmanlike actâ€쳌. However just as officials in basketball might let a ticky tack foul go during the final shot of a tie game, they should have done the same on Saturday. It’s not as if Washington QB Jake Locker turned to the crowd and launched the ball into the stands. He merely flung it over his shoulder as he was standing up. How can you blame him? The Huskies had just scored the tying, or what they thought would be the tying, touchdown with 2-seconds remaining. Of course the end of the story has now been heard when Washington’s extra-point which actually turned out to be about a 35-yard attempt, was blocked and the Huskies lost 28-27. Not only did the officials call drop UW to 0-2 on the season it probably cost head coach Ty Willingham his job…
What a difference a week makes. If the Ohio State – USC game was played last weekend, the line would most likely have been less than a TD in favor of the Trojans. Now because the Bucks were flat, unmotivated and struggled against the Bobcats of Ohio, they are getting 10.5 points at some places. Just for history’s sake, we looked deep into our in depth database and found that the Buckeyes have been a double digit underdog just nine times since 1980. Four of those games were against Michigan. Since the start of the 2000 season, OSU has been a double digit underdog just one time. That was in the 2002 National Championship game against Miami. We all know what happened in that one. If not, the Scarlet and Gray won the game outright 31-24…
