Our Pick to Win the National Championship
by ASA - 09/01/2004
The Miami Hurricanes are our pick to win the National Championship this season. As we’ve stated many times in the past, scheduling is a HUGE key to making this selection. There are a lot of very good, capable teams in College Football, however is their schedule conducive to going undefeated or losing one game? We have no doubt that there are some teams with three losses that are just as good as some of the teams that wind up with one loss. We feel Miami has the talent to win it all and their schedule is nicely laid out for them. Their two toughest opponents, Florida State and Virginia Tech, will both have to come to Miami. Miami is nearly unbeatable at home where they are an incredible 110-12 SU since October of 1985. Overall (home & away) they are 46-4 SU since the start of the 2000 season. The Canes toughest road game will most likely be @ Virginia. Their other road games include Houston, Georgia Tech, NC State and North Carolina. Also the good thing about the FSU game is it’s the first on the schedule. Thus if Miami would happen to lose to their toughest opponent in 2004 it would be as early as possible. As they say, if you are in the running for a National Championship and are going to lose, lose early in the season. U of M returns 12 starters and 46 lettermen from a team that sat a top the 2003 poll for all but one week. The offensive line is always extremely important and Miami returns three key starters and two more with starting experience. Between the five projected starters on the O-Line they have 55 combined starts. Brock Berlin is back at QB and should be much improved over last year. Also, we expect RB Tyrone Moss to be one of the best in the country this year. The defense was #2 in the country in 2003 and should pick up right where they left off. The bottom line is, when you have a talented, top notch team like Miami at 10 to 1 odds, you have to take a look at them. This is a team that has lost just four games the last four years! Their schedule is also in their favor which, as we said, is a key ingredient on the way to a National Championship. We’ll look at the Canes with their 10 to 1 odds to win it all!
